The West Bengal Government, on the 19th of February, transferred Rajiv Kumar, the former Commissioner of Kolkata Police, to the Crime Investigation Department (CID.)

Rajiv Kumar was appointed as the Additional Director General (ADG) of Police and Inspector General of Police (IGP.) The State Government also hired Anuj Sharma, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1991 batch, as the new Commissioner of Kolkata Police.

The decision of the State Government came after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) accused Rajiv Kumar of tampering with the evidence in two chit fund scams.

The CBI, which is investigating the Sharada Group and Rose Valley chit fund scams, claimed, Rajiv Kumar, the initial investigator of the case, manipulated the evidence and helped the main culprits escape. They also accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of being involved in the case and of taking bribes in order to protect the main accused.

The agency also filed a petition in the Supreme Court, on the 3rd of February. Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, called for a protest, ‘Save the Constitution,’ against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the CBI, after they accused and interrogated Rajiv Kumar.

The TMC deemed the investigation as an attempt by the BJP to harass the West Bengal Government, after the United India Rally was organised by the Mamata Banerjee led TMC, on the 19th of January.

Mr. Kumar will take over his new position as the Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General of Police, from the 19th of February.
